Price: £110.00

The horsefield tortoise is a very lively, hardy species, it comes from the desert and mountain areas of Russia, Turkey right through to Afghanistan. This species will reach a length of around 8" to 9" (20-23cm)and on average can live between twenty and thirty five years. This all depends on whether they are kept in the right conditions and fed on the correct diet.
Diet: They are fed on a wide variety of fruit and vegetables eg kale, dried alfa grass, cabbage, spinach, carrots, sweet potatoes, apples, pears, strawberries, melon, tomato, mango and the list goes on. Things not to feed are kiwi fruit and bananas because these are sugary and can cause colic, also avocado pears which are high in fat and can cause long term damage to the liver. We also feed a complete tortoise diet every other day (t-rex and hagen exo terra)to ensure they get the right nutrition. On the days we feed fruit and vegetables we add a vitamin/calcium based supplement eg (nutrobal or zoovite)
Bathing: All our tortoises are bathed every other day (young hatchlings are bathed daily) in tepid shallow water, to this we add avipro(this is a pre/pro biotic helping the gut to function properly and helps to reduce stress)also aquatize is added to remove chlorine from the water therefore making it safe to drink. We have kept tortoises for many years now and found that this method has kept our tortoises fit, healthy and free from any types of illness.
Heat: Even though the horsefield tortoise can with stand a wide variety of temperatures (40-90f) vivarium temperatures should be around 85f on the basking side and 70-80f on the cool side in the daytime. Night time temperature 70-75f. This can be achieved by heat mat placed under the vivarium or by ceramic heater from above.
Lighting: It is essential for uv (full spectrum)lighting as this provides vitamin d and d3 a vital key for the well being of your tortoise. We also use a basking bulb for them to warm up.
Substrate: This species of tortoise are best kept on dry bedding eg bark chippings (large pieces so can not be swallowed) cat litter(wood based) or artificial grass matting.
